07.12.02 - The Offspring to Perform Benefit Concert For Surfer Organizations' Spinal Injury Research
The Offspring, T.S.O.L., and The Line will perform a charity concert at the Anah eim House of Blues Wednesday, July 31 to benefit They Will Surf Again (TWSA) and Life Rolls On (LRO), not-for-profits started by professional surfers dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries (SCI).

Tickets are $25 and go on sale Saturday, July 13 at noon through Ticketmaster an d the House of Blues, Anaheim box office. Organizers anticipate a sold-out conce rt and will award net proceeds totaling an expected $20,000 to SCI Research Adva ncement and Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. Funds are also earmarked fo r related research to find cures for such diseases as Parkinson‘s and Alzheimer‘ s.

Two pro surfers, Seth Elmer and James Pribram, along with Richard Yelland founde d TWSA in the summer of 2000. Dedicated to supporting SCI research that promises a cure within five years, TWSA was inspired by Bob Dancey, a friend and father of two who broke his neck surfing in Oceanside in March of 2000 and is now a qua driplegic. LRO is a non-profit group founded by former surf star and quadripleg ic, Jesse Billauer, who suffered a spinal cord injury while surfing at Zuma Beac h in March 1996.

Last year the organizations hosted golf and surf events that raised more than $5 0,000 and the concert is the third and newest fund-raising activity planned for the week. (The Fourth Annual Surf & Turf Golf Tournament is Monday, July 29 at the Malibu Country Club and the Second Annual Surf Expression Session is on Augu st 4 at noon at the Huntington Pier.)

“We decided to build on the groundswell of support and add a concert to the line up,“ said Yelland. “It all started coming into place when a close friend of The Offspring, who suffers from Parkinson‘s, put me in touch with the band‘s guitar ist Noodles. He really sparked the band‘s interest in our cause and we are grate ful for their generous offer to perform and help raise funds for research that p romises major breakthroughs in the very near future.“

Noodles, an avid surfer who first read about the organizations in surf magazines , was eager to participate. “Being a surfer and having a friend who could potent ially benefit from their work, this issue hits home with me. I wanted to find a way to help and how that we‘re doing the concert, the band and I can contribute by putting energy behind the effort to find a cure.”

In addition to attending the concert, supporters can also participate in the Sur f & Turf Charity Golf Tournament July 29 at the Malibu Country Club. TWSA and LR O founders will be joing by pro surfers, celebrities and supporters for tee offs beginning at 10 a.m. Form more information on the golf tournament contract Josh Billauer at (619) 980–7990.

After Wednesday‘s concert, the fundraising continues the following Sunday, Augus t 4 with The Second Annual They Will Surf Again/Life Rolls On Expression Session . Scheduled immediately after the men‘s short board semi-finals during the Phili ps Fusion US Open of Surfing at Huntington Pier, the surf competition fundraiser will feature the world‘s top competitors including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, T aj Burrow, Tim Curran, Chris, Dan and Keith Mally, Pribram, and Pat O‘ Connel (a ppearances subject to change). Additionally, quadriplegic surf phenom, Jesse Bil lauer will ride the surf on his custom board in what promises to be an inspirati onal and emotional performance.

The Life Rolls On Foundation (LRO) is a non-profit 501© 3 organization establ ished to promote ongoing efforts to develop effective treatments and a cure of p aralysis caused by spinal cord injuries (SCI). The Foundation contributes to re search aimed at finding a cure for the catastrophic injury and provides funding to non-profit organizations that create opportunities for those afflicted with s pinal cord injuries. The Foundation supports efforts to provide hope for those affected by SCIs through a variety of recreational, educational, and development al activities and programs designed to bring to the forefront of the media the i mmediate concern of finding a cure for SCI.

They Will Surf Again (TWSA) is a 501© 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the primary goal of raising money for SCI research that promises a cure within f ive years. Concurrently, TWSA mission is to raise awareness surrounding its cau se and provide definitive guidance for beach-goers on how they can avoid traumat ic spinal injuries. TWSA operates under the belief that providing hope is vital to fulfilling its future dream that those suffering spinal injuries will one da y walk, and of course, surf again. Earlier last week (January 23), RAC and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFL-CIO (AFTRA) and American Federation of Musicians (AFM) members converged on Sacramento calling on legislators to support Senate Bill 1246 (Murray), legislation to repeal California Labor Code Section 2855, subdivision B, because it unfairly excludes recording artists from the same protection of law afforded all other working persons in California who sign a personal services contract. They came together to repeal the amendment to the state‘s “seven-year“ statute which amendment exempts musicians from the seven-year limit on entertainment contracts.

RAC, AFTRA and AFM members — including Don Henley, Carole King, John Fogerty, Beck, Stevie Nicks, Ray Parker, Jr., Sheryl Crow, the Deftones, Paul Doucette (Matchbox Twenty), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Dexter Holland (Offspring) and Paul Almeida, President of the Department for Professional Employees of the AFL-CIO; John Connolly, President AFTRA; and John Russum, Executive Director AFTRA LA — met with legislators to discuss their support of SB 1246 (Murray). Joining them were Dick Gabriel, National Assistant to the President of American Federation of Musicians; representatives of the Hollywood Entertainment Labor Council; Tom Rankin, President, California Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; Art Pulaski, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the California Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; and Miguel Contreras, President, Los Angeles County Labor Federation.

RAC represents the economic and creative interests of featured recording artists whose interests are not always directly represented by other organizations or the recording industry. In the past, RAC members have successfully testified before congress to repeal “work for hire” copyright legislation which was detrimental to recording artists.
